Health Care Partnership for Children

Case Profile 1

The Alliance helped a ten-year-old boy obtain medical care for enuresis, which had been repeatedly misdiagnosed as a behavioral problem. The child was referred to the Partnership by his group home and was assigned a physician at Orthopaedic Hospital who diagnosed a physiological defect that had been causing the boy's enuresis since infancy. The Alliance assisted the hospital in obtaining consent for the boy's surgery, and worked with the boy's attorney and social worker to obtain consent from his biological mother for the procedure. The boy's enuresis has been corrected, and he is receiving mental health services to deal with psychological issues related to his multiple placements. He is stable in his current group home placement and has an ongoing relationship with his physician.

Case Profile 2

The Alliance helped a three-year-old girl who had been severely malnourished. Through the Health Care Partnership, The Alliance matched the child with Children's Hospital. The girl's new physician diagnosed the child's severe weight loss as an adverse reaction to earlier prescribed antibiotics she had been given by a local clinic. Following referral to a specialist, a change in medication and diet, the child is recovering and, for the first time, has her own, permanent pediatrician.
